Hey traveler, welcome back to Talk Travel to Me. This week I'm answering the question: could the right travel agent have rescued your last family vacation? Let's talk about it. I want you to think for a second about the last vacation you planned on your own—the flights you searched for, the hotel you booked, maybe the travel insurance you added to your cart and then forgot to check out of. Now I want you to think about what would have happened if something had gone wrong. Not a small thing, a real thing. Maybe an airline shutting down overnight just days before your vacation was to start, or a hurricane closing your honeymoon resort while you're desperately trying to figure out the seating chart for your reception. How about a family emergency that meant you needed to get off a cruise ship and get home fast? Who would you have called? Could the right travel agent have rescued your last family vacation? Okay, maybe rescue sounds like a strong word, but I think by the end of today's episode, you might feel differently. Because today I'm sharing seven real stories from real clients—people who had an answer to that question because they booked their vacations with one of the professional travel advisors at my agency. They found out exactly what it was worth when the moment came. We're talking about a daughter who had to leave a cruise ship mid-sailing to rush to her father's ICU bedside, a family whose blizzard-canceled flights home turned into a surprise Disney World trip, and yes, we're also talking about a special character dining reservation that went poof from an app and had a mom in full panic mode. Because no problem is too big and no problem is too small for my team. In every single story, our clients didn't have to scramble. They didn't have to panic. They only had to make one good decision. All right, let's get into it.
First up is a story that happened to me and my client. One day I had a client that was taking a Southern Caribbean cruise. I had checked in with her and she was having the time of her life. Her, her spouse, and her kiddos were having a blast. And the next thing I know, I got a text that said, 'Kristy, I need to go home right now. My dad is in the ICU.' And I looked at the phone and then I looked at my app and said, they are at sea right now; tomorrow they are in Aruba. So I responded to her and said, 'OK, I'm going to make arrangements for you to get off the ship and fly home from Aruba tomorrow. I need you to start getting packed, get your stuff together. I'm going to handle all the details. Stand by.' I went off. First, I called the cruise line because, true story, you can't just hop off a cruise ship in the middle of a sailing and disappear without letting them know. So I alerted them, told them exactly what was going on, what I was going to do, and then ended that call. They actually went to her on the ship and said, 'Hey, is there anything we can do to help you?' So that activated them being a kind of on-the-ground support system for my client and her family. I went to the airlines, booked a flight from Aruba to Boston—thank goodness they have nonstop flights. I arranged for a private car service to pick her up right from the pier and whisk her off to the airport. All of this was done within an hour. Reached back out to her and said, 'You are all set. Here is your flight information. The driver is going to meet you at this spot. Here's a little picture of the map so that you know exactly where to look for them, and they'll take you to the airport and you'll be home in Boston by this time.' When she reached out to me in the morning, they were in the car on the way to the airport in Aruba. She was able to get home and be with her dad. All right, that's the most intense story I'm going to share with you today, but it's not the only one where having the right team made all the difference.
Next up is a story that comes from Jen Sutton, our travel advisor in Chicago. Jen had booked a client on their dream honeymoon to Jamaica, only to start seeing news stories about a major hurricane heading to Jamaica. So she's activated, she's paying attention for several days, and then on October 28th, 2025, Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica. And it was the most catastrophic damage that Jamaica has ever had in their recorded history. And the storm forced the closure of her client's chosen honeymoon resort and every other resort on the island. It's amazing to me how Jen did this, but her clients were completely unaware of the situation because, hey, they're planning a wedding! They were literally trying to figure out how to keep Aunt K away from Aunt B and making sure that the table arrangements worked for everything else that was going on, right? So Jen put together two solid options: one for St. Lucia and one for Curacao. And she went to them and said, 'Hi, we've got a slight problem, but I've got a solution for you already.' That was the first time that they heard about this hurricane. And she was able to say, 'Here are the options. Which one would you like?' They chose one of the two and she went off and continued to handle all the details. She took care of booking the new resort, changing the flights, and she also took care of arranging for the massage they had scheduled for the resort in Jamaica over to the new resort. She thought of everything and was able to go back to them and say, 'You're all set. Nothing for you to worry about. I've updated your client portal. And guess what? Now you're going to St. Lucia!' I can't imagine, as someone who did once plan a wedding a long time ago, how helpful that was and how the bride didn't have to worry about a single thing. It was just handled.
Speaking of handled, let's talk about Sammy's story of her clients who were enjoying their last full day at sea on a Royal Caribbean cruise as a blizzard is forecast to hit New England—which, by the way, is where Sammy lives too. So she's doing storm prep at home and she's also going, 'Oh my goodness, I have these clients that are due to fly back in the middle of this storm.' Of course, that didn't happen because all of the airlines canceled their flights. And in fact, she couldn't get a flight for them out of Miami or Fort Lauderdale for five days. So instead of spending several days in an airport hotel, Sammy posed the idea of a last-minute trip to Walt Disney World, a place this family had never been to. By the time they stepped off the ship, Sammy had secured their train tickets to get them to Orlando, had booked their Disney hotel and ticket package, all of their dining reservations, and Lightning Lanes. And she also prepared a 'Your First Trip to Disney World' guide for the family to read while they were on the train. The only thing these clients had to do was say yes to the suggestion of a Walt Disney World vacation and authorize the payments in the client portal. Sammy even went so far as to put together all of the documentation so that they could present it to the travel insurance provider and get part of this new vacation covered. Sammy was actually able to turn this potential nightmare into a magical bonus vacation that this family will remember forever. They even left a Google review for her about it because they were so amazed at what she was able to do.
So sometimes the crisis that we are forced into is based on nature, but sometimes it's a business decision made overnight with zero warning. And that brings me to a story that I encountered just this past week. Spirit Airlines shut down with no warning. I mean, come on, we knew that they were struggling financially for a while. We knew that they were trying to merge with other airlines to save themselves, but we didn't know that they were just going to say, 'Hey, by the way, we're done. We're flying our last flight and we aren't doing any more.' So I had clients that were booked and ready to fly on Spirit this week when this airline just said, poof, we're done. This wasn't a delay or cancellation—I mean, that's something I've dealt with like a hundred or so times over 12 years—but this was a first: an entire airline ceased to exist just days before my clients were ready to board. So I jumped into action. I secured new flights for them and I prepared the documentation for the travel insurance. A little aside here: who our agency partners with matters. I mean, it always does, but even more so when something goes crazy. So many people book the cheapest travel insurance policies. Some even make the dreaded mistake of booking insurance through the destination. So many companies don't include things like trip cancellation or interruption due to financial default. My insurance partner does. All right, I could go down the rabbit hole about that because travel insurance is truly one of my favorite things to talk about, but I'll save that for another episode.
Those first four stories were all about how we respond to a crisis, how we react fast, how we use our industry connections to create the best possible scenario for our clients. But sometimes the best thing we do happens before they even leave home. Next up is Darcy's story. Darcy is one of our travel advisors in Indiana, and a client reached out to her to book an Alaskan cruise. This was an extended family group with a strict budget, and they desperately wanted to experience Alaska together. Now, you may not know this, but Alaskan cruises are expensive just right out the gate. Reason being is it's just a very short season, limited inventory, and it is a hugely popular destination. All of that together means a budget vacation doesn't usually happen in Alaska. But Darcy said, 'Let's just see what we can come up with.' And they gave her the dates and they said, 'This is when we want to go.' And Darcy went off and started looking at options, looking at just the different possibilities for this extended family. She immediately flagged that their desired cruise date coincided with the World Cup events in Vancouver. So the hotels near the pier or even in the general area, all of them were well out of budget—like the cost was insane. So she decided to look and say, 'What if we shifted to after the World Cup?' Well, wouldn't you know, the hotel costs dropped significantly and she was able to find a cruise combined with that hotel that literally made it work in their budget. So the client didn't know that—they don't know what they don't know. And it took her research and her knowledge of like, 'Hmm, this is all really expensive, I wonder why,' and being able to go and see the resources that said this is what's affecting the prices in that area. That's the value of working with someone whose job is to know, especially if your job is to be an accountant or a lawyer or a stay-at-home mom or any number of things, right? You're out there living your life and keeping everything else in your life afloat. Darcy and the rest of our team, our job is to know what's going on in these destinations and make it work.
So protecting the budget is one thing, but sometimes what our clients need isn't a fix or a money save—it's just someone to think through things with them. This is Nicole's story about how a client reached out to her and said, 'Hey, I'm feeling pressured by someone in my travel group and also all of these Facebook groups to spend money on Disney's Premier Passes.' Those are the Lightning Lane passes where you buy one for one park for the whole day and you don't have to schedule anything; you just go and you get entry for every ride that uses Lightning Lanes in the park. They are so much money, so much money! Nicole was able to say, 'Let's talk about it. Let's go through the pros and the cons, what it actually means for adding that convenience level to your trip, and what it's going to add to your budget.' She had no agenda, just information about how it all works and honest advice. They made their own decision, but they did it fully informed, not because Josie next door said that you have to have it or somebody on Facebook said that your trip will be ruined if you don't get the Premier Passes.
Speaking of Disney, we're going to close with one that might make you laugh a little because it really does show that no problem is too big or too small for us. We're going to call this one the Vanishing Disney Dining Reservation. Thanks, IT! And this is Lacey's story. One of her clients reached out with an SOS text that said, 'Oh my goodness, my dining reservation for tonight—you know, the one that we have been so excited about and my kids have planned outfits around and all of that—it's gone. Poof. It's not in the app anymore.' And Lacey was like, 'I got you.' Lacey is like so chill, and she was like, 'Don't worry about anything, I got you.' She went to her client portal where she writes everything down, finds the confirmation number, reaches out to Disney's IT, and has the booking reinstated into the app so that the client can see it. Now, I wouldn't say this was easy peasy lemon squeezy because Lacey had to deal with IT, and Disney's IT is... it's a thing, okay? I'm just going to put it that way—it's a whole thing. They're a fabulous destination and I love them—I'm obsessed with them personally—but their IT is from like the Flintstones, okay? So she had to deal with a lot to get it set up with them and get through the process, waited on hold for an obscene amount of time, but nothing that the client had to worry about. So that is where that magic shows up for sure.
All right. That was seven stories, seven families. And in every single one, the thing that made the difference wasn't luck—it was one good decision before the trip ever started. I know you might be thinking, 'I've always just booked it myself and it's been fine.' And maybe it has been, but here's what I want you to sit with: fine isn't the same as taken care of. Our clients know the difference now. And if you're contemplating planning your next family vacation on your own, I just want you to ask yourself the question that we started off the episode with: who would you call?
