Guru Crew FAQs
Are people who work with Mickey Guru Travel Company considered Disney Travel Agents?
The only people permitted to call themselves “Disney Travel Agents” are people employed by the Walt Disney Travel Company. Even so, you will see a lot of agents who work elsewhere incorrectly give themselves this title. Our agency’s relationship with Disney, as an Authorized Disney Vacation Planner agency, is very important to us; we are sure to use the right terminology. Our agents are travel agents specializing in Disney destinations.
Why should someone looking to start working as a travel advisor choose Mickey Guru Travel Company?
Our agency is set to celebrate 10 years in business in 2024. Throughout that time founder Kristy Ouellette has demonstrated unwavering dedication to members of the team. Beginning with what she considers the bare minimum, paying commission according to a set schedule and being present and accessible to the agents every day. A former educator, Kristy is focused on providing team members with an environment where they can thrive. There is a focus on developing relationships amongst team members. A core belief sets the stage for the team that both new and experienced agents bring meaningful things to the table. There is no substitute for the wisdom shared by agents who’ve been in the business for years but new fresh perspectives brought by new agents is also hugely beneficial.
Kristy developed our initial training program based on feedback from agents and leaders in the travel industry and works closely with trainees throughout the program. Additionally she offers continuous ongoing education to all team members in a variety of subject areas including marketing, relationship based sales, time management, improving processes to impact client experience, and more.
Why would someone already working as a travel agent choose to work with Mickey Guru Travel Company?
Our agency has been in business nearly 10 years and during that time we’ve developed a community where agents thrive and support each other. With a focus on the agent experience, Kristy ensures that commissions are paid as scheduled, offers regular opportunities for training and professional development, and she is available for individual mentoring and support as needed.
Our agency has well established relationships with a number of travel suppliers and afford our team members with a number of professional opportunities. In addition to being an Authorized Disney Vacation Planner, UPreferred with Universal Parks & Resorts, we are a part of the Travel Leaders Network consortia, and work closely with Sandals & Beaches Resorts, Virgin Voyages, Royal Caribbean International and many others.
Is there a cost involved in becoming a travel advisor?
The initial fee of $395 covers the cost of the required background check and intensive 8 week new agent training program. Additionally, there is an annual fee due at the beginning of each contract term that covers some of the costs associated with hosting the agent. Covered costs include coverage under the agency’s Errors of Omissions insurance, company email and virtual workplace accounts for each agent. Finally, there is a monthly charge for the Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software, paid directly by the advisor to the software company.
How does compensation work?
Travel advisors are paid a commission based on their travel bookings. We offer a competitive program where agents earn a higher commission percentage as they sell more travel.
Are there any benefits?
Once a travel advisor has sold a minimum amount of travel to clients, they are eligible for travel industry memberships and discounts for personal travel. As this is an independent contractor role, there are no “employee benefits.”
What type of time commitment is required?
We are seeking people who are willing and able to spend a minimum of 15 hours per week working on their travel business. Independent contractors set their own hours, decide what services they wish to offer their clients, and how they will manage their workload. But this is not the type of work that someone can do just a couple of hours per week. There is a consistent commitment to your business that is required in order to be successful.
If I am offered a spot with the team at Mickey Guru Travel Company, what travel destinations can I sell?
All of our advisors sell Disney Destinations and Universal Parks & Resorts vacations but we also offer many other options. Advisors may choose to complete additional training to also sell hotel-only stays (Marriott, Hyatt etc), private home rentals, a wide variety of all-inclusive resorts (Sandals, Karisma, Hard Rock etc), all major cruise lines, European vacations, guided group tours, and more.
As a travel advisor with Mickey Guru, will I be asked to recruit others to join the agency?
No, your role as a travel advisor with our agency is to sell travel and provide the best possible experience for your clients. There is absolutely no recruiting requested or allowed.
As a travel advisor, where would I find clients to book travel with me?
We provide in-depth training on ways to launch and grow your client base during the onboarding process. The best place to find clients, at the outset, is within your personal connections whether that is friends, coworkers, members of your local community or similar.
What is the process of becoming a part of the team?
We start with the initial screening application, if we feel a candidate might be a good fit for the team we will request an in-person or Zoom interview. If both the candidate and the agency feel it’s a good fit we will move forward with additional screening measures which include reference checks, writing samples, and more.
What does the initial training look like?
New advisors complete a series of workshops on topics such as agency policies and procedures, marketing, sales, business management, and destination-specific training. New advisors also meet regularly with the agency owner and mentors via scheduled Zoom meetings. The new advisor training program is a self paced 8 week program that takes place completely online.
